Grande Prairie RCMP to increase quad, UTV and boat patrols in popular areas this summer

The Grande Prairie RCMP say residents can expect to see them and the County of Grande Prairie Regional Enforcement Services officers with increased regularity this summer in the highly travelled areas of the backcountry and waterways.

In a release issued late Friday, the RCMP say they will have increased quad, UTV and jet boat patrols this summer in those highly travelled areas of the County, as well as areas south of the city like the train bridge, Evergreen Park, and the Wapiti and Smoky Rivers.

“The patrols will focus on the safe operation of off-highway vehicles and boats, as well as the prevention of impaired driving,” says Sgt. Shawn Graham with the Grande Prairie RCMP, in a release.

The RCMP are also sending out some safety reminders to residents to enjoy their off-highway vehicles this summer. Those include

  • Possess all relevant documentation when engaging in off-highway vehicle activities.
  • Wear a helmet.
  • Drive at a safe speed. Use caution, be alert and slow down when operating on unfamiliar terrain.
  • Ride in groups and let people know the route you will be taking and when you will be coming back.
  • Do not use drugs or consume alcohol while operating an OHV.

Boaters are reminded to:

  • Make a pre-departure checklist to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Check local weather conditions before heading out on the river, as conditions can change quickly.
  • Never operate a boat while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Wear a life jacket when on a watercraft.
  • Pack emergency supplies like extra food, clothes and a cell phone.
  • Be alert of large vessels and watercraft that can be restricted in their ability to stop, turn or flee.
