Aboriginal Head Start program students to be celebrated with parade Saturday

May 29, 2021 | 7:00 AM

The Grande Prairie Friendship Centre Aboriginal Head Start program will be celebrating the third annual Aboriginal Head Start Urban and Northern Communities Day of Recognition as well as some of its graduating students on May 29.

Last year, the Aboriginal Head Start program did a drive-by parade to celebrate all of its graduating students.

This year, the program is tying in both the graduation, as well as the Northern Communities Day of Recognition.

“Because this day is actually the Aboriginal Head Start Urban and Northern Communities Day of Recognition, we decided we are going to celebrate that and go to all of our family’s homes,” said Joleen Bateman, the Program Coordinator for Aboriginal Head Start.

When on the parade route the kids in the Head Start program who are graduating will be invited to come out and dance around in their regalia.

All of the parents with graduating kids made their own custom regalia for their kids, which is a tradition for graduating the program.

Bateman tells EverythingGP that they’ve stepped up their game this year after last year’s graduation parade was so successful.

“We really enjoyed it (the parade) last year. This year we are kicking it up a notch, we are going to have a float, we have some folks coming from the GP Car Club and one of the fire departments is coming, so that’ll be really cool for the kids.”

The parade will begin at 2:00 p.m.
