Grande Prairie drops below 100 active COVID-19 cases

The City of Grande Prairie added four new cases of COVID-19 and 14 recoveries for Friday, May 28, bringing the active case total in the city down by ten to 96.

This is the first time the city has been below 100 active COVID-19 cases since December 6, when there were also 96 active cases.

Three new cases and five recoveries were recorded in the County of Grande Prairie for Friday. There remains 51 active cases there.

There were 406 new cases of COVID-19 identified across Alberta following the completion of 6,882 tests, resulting in a 5.9 per cent test positivity rate.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day May 28 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 3,851 cases (96 active, 3,729 recovered, 26 deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 1,364 cases (51 active, 1,308 recovered, five deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 581 cases (16 active, 561 recovered, four deaths)
  • Birch Hills County: 30 cases (all recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 81 cases (one active, 80 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 29 cases (three active, 26 recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 146 cases (two active, 134 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 710 cases (three active, 696 recovered, 12 deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 358 cases (five active, 352 recovered, one death)
  • M.D. of Peace: 676 cases (11 active, 665 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 131 cases (three active, 127 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 135 cases (134 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 311 cases (310 recovered, one death)
  • County of Northern Lights: 135 cases (seven active, 129 recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 1,871 cases (55 active, 1,790 recovered, 26 deaths)

Hospitalizations

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 in Alberta have decreased by 39 to 478 as of Friday night, while the number of ICU patients decreased by seven to 140.

With the province also reaching the 60 per cent threshold of Albertans 12+ having received one dose of vaccine on May 27, Alberta will reach Stage 2 of the “Open for Summer” plan by June 10, as long as hospitalizations remain below 500 and keep trending downward.

In the North Zone, 50 people are in hospital (down two), 12 of whom are in intensive care (unchanged).

Fatalities

There were eight new deaths reported to Alberta Health from across the province over the last 24 hours. A total of 2,214 Albertans have now died as a result of COVID-19 complications.

Vaccinations

The City of Grande Prairie now has 37.1 per cent of its population with at least one dose of vaccine. Another 698 people have been reported to have had their first shot, bringing the total number of people in Grande Prairie to get at least the first dose to 27,875.

In the County, 188 more people have been reported to have their first dose. In the east and west County region combined, 12,167 people have received at least one dose, equalling 36.2 per cent of the population.

Across Alberta, 52,120 doses were given out on Friday, bringing the total number of Albertans who have received at least one dose of vaccine to 2,339,672 while a total of 2,720,687 total doses have been administered.

That total means 52.3 per cent of Albertans are immunized with at least one dose or 61.5 per cent of those aged 12+. Alberta Health adds 8.5 per cent of the population is fully vaccinated.
