Update: Autopsy shows foal north of High Prairie died of natural causes

Jun 1, 2021 | 4:42 PM

UPDATE: Alberta Fish and Wildlife have conducted an autopsy on the foal that was initially thought to have been shot and killed in the High Prairie area and have found the animal actually died of natural causes.

The High Prairie RCMP had initially thought that the foal, which was discovered on the owner’s property about 30 km’s north of High Prairie down the Heart River Dam Road, was fatally shot.

Corporal Deanna Fontaine with the Alberta RCMP confirmed to EverythingGP that the initial report came as the animal did have an injury which the RCMP believed at the time resembled a gunshot wound.

That belief led the RCMP to issue a call for information from the public.

However, several hours after issuing the call, the RCMP received the report from Fish and Wildlife, which clarified the cause of death.

The investigation into this matter is now closed.

The High Prairie RCMP are investigating after they say a newborn horse was shot and killed approximately 30 kilometers north of High Prairie.

Police were notified of the shot foal on May 26, which had reportedly happened sometime in the early morning hours of that day on a property along the Heart River Dam Road.

The RCMP’s investigation into the incident confirmed the foal was shot on the owner’s property.

Mounties are asking anyone who may have information about the shooting to contact the High Prairie RCMP at 780-523-3370, or to submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the “P3 Tips” app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store.
