Grande Prairie records 27th COVID-19 fatality

The City of Grande Prairie has recorded its 27th death from COVID-19 complications since March of 2020.

Alberta Health says the fatality was one of four reported to them over the last 24 hours and was a female in her 50’s with no known comorbidities. The woman died on May 25.

There have now been 2,231 Albertans who have died as a result of COVID-19. Of those, 181 have occurred in the North Zone.

Meantime, the City of Grande Prairie added six new cases of COVID-19 and 14 recoveries for Tuesday, June 1, bringing the active case total in the City down to 72.

Five new cases and five recoveries were recorded in the County of Grande Prairie for Tuesday. There remains 53 active cases there.

There were 410 new cases of COVID-19 identified across Alberta following the completion of 8,315 tests, resulting in a 4.9 per cent test positivity rate.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of June 1 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 3,871 cases (72 active, 3,772 recovered, 27 deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 1,381 cases (53 active, 1,323 recovered, five deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 582 cases (11 active, 567 recovered, four deaths)
  • Birch Hills County: 30 cases (all recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 81 cases (one active, 80 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 29 cases (two active, 27 recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 146 cases (two active, 134 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 710 cases (two active, 696 recovered, 12 deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 360 cases (six active, 353 recovered, one death)
  • M.D. of Peace: 679 cases (12 active, 667 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 131 cases (two active, 127 recovered, two deaths)
  • Clear Hills County: 135 cases (134 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 313 cases (one active, 311 recovered, one death)
  • County of Northern Lights: 136 cases (three active, 133 recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 1,881 cases (41 active, 1,814 recovered, 26 deaths)

Hospitalizations

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 in Alberta have decreased by three to 435 as of Tuesday night, while the number of ICU patients decreased by five to 122.

In the North Zone, 43 people are in hospital (down four), 12 of whom are in intensive care (down one).

Vaccinations

The City of Grande Prairie now has 39.1 per cent of its population with at least one dose of vaccine. Another 335 people have been reported to have had their first shot, bringing the total number of people in Grande Prairie to get at least the first dose to 28,994.

In the County, 134 more people have been reported to have their first dose. In the east and west County region combined, 12,880 people have received at least one dose, equalling 38.1 per cent of the population.

Across Alberta, 30,611 doses were given out on Tuesday, bringing the total number of Albertans who have received at least one dose of vaccine to 2,435,067 while a total of 2,841,779 total doses have been administered.

That total means 54.5 per cent of Albertans are immunized with at least one dose or 64 per cent of those aged 12+. Alberta Health adds 9.1 per cent of the population is fully vaccinated.
