High Prairie RCMP reminds OHV users to be safe over the summer

Jun 10, 2021 | 12:41 PM

With the warm, summer weather moving through the Peace Region, the High Prairie RCMP is asking Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) users to be safe on the trails.

The RCMP says every year officers respond to numerous OHV related calls, and ask that users follow a few key guidelines:

  • OHVs must be registered and insured with a visible license plate
  • Operate OHVs at safe, reasonable speeds
  • Do not operate OHVs with more passengers than it’s designed to carry
  • Wear approved safety gear when using an OHV
  • Make sure the vehicle is properly maintained
  • Carry an emergency kit that includes a cell phone, charger, first aid supplies, food and water
  • Let someone know the route you are travelling and how long you expect to be out
  • Be considerate and share trails with other users
  • Do not operate OHVs under the influence of drugs or alcohol

The Government of Alberta has a Guide to Outdoor Recreation on Provincial Crown Land that the RCMP advises OHV users review.

Mounties do patrol urban and rural areas and will be on trails educating riders and enforcing rules and regulations.

The RCMP reminds users that impaired driving laws apply to OHVs, and anyone caught operating an OHV under the influence of drugs or alcohol can be charged under the Criminal Code of Canada.

High Prairie Bylaw Services can provide further information on OHV use in the area at 780-523-3388.

Complaints of OHV use can be made tot he High prairie RCMP at 780-723-3370.
