A Grande Prairie Hockey Legend has passed away.

An obituary posted to the EverythingGP website says Max Henning died June 3 at the age of 97.

The GP Hockey Legends website says he was inducted as a builder in 2004.

Henning was a rushing defenceman in his playing days. He helped start the Grande Prairie Key Club for returning World War II veterans after serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force himself.

Henning was also a player/manager for the Red Devils team in the ’50s, a club that was later re-named the Athletics.

Henning also served as a city councillor, volunteer firefighter, and was part of the group that helped start the radio station now known as Big Country 93.1 (CJXX).

His obituary says a celebration of life is planned for a later date.
