Art Gallery of Grande Prairie to re-open June 29

The Art Gallery of Grande Prairie will re-open its doors to the public on June 29.

The gallery has been closed since December 13 because of COVID-19 restrictions.

Along with the re-opening, the gallery will return to its normal hours of operations. Capacity will also remain limited to 30 people at a time until the province moves fully into Stage 3 of its re-opening plan.

Jeff Erbach, the Executive Director of the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie, says they’re excited to welcome everyone back.

“Museums in Alberta have been closed for the longest period of time for any museums in the country. Ultimately, as a major cultural facility in the region, we are super excited to host people and invite them back to the gallery spaces.”

During the pandemic, Erbach and his team moved most of their gallery online, which he says was met with tremendous success.

“Over that time period (staying closed) we were really busy. In converting all out material digital and providing digital learning experiences for our community, that has kept us really busy.”

“We are excited for people to come out to a really safe, clean and spacious environment. It’s free admission as always.”

With the re-opening of the gallery comes new exhibits, and this summer’s exhibits, according to Erbach, will focus on various cultures.

“We’re opening with two really exciting shows. One is we are commissioning local Indigenous artists who worked with elders to transform oral, tradition and storytelling into visual art material.”

“That’s matched with an international exhibition, which is a Canadian Filipino exhibition called ‘Tuloy, Tawid,’ about the cultural and identity of Filipino people,” explained Erbach.

The Art Gallery’s theme this summer will be referred to as the “summer of culture”.
