The Town of High Prairie has lowered it’s flags to half mast following the news of the death of Police Service Dog (PSD) Jago.

High Prairie Mayor Brian Panasiuk says he and Council felt the K-9 member was a true member of the RCMP.

“So just like we would for any member of the RCMP that died in the line of duty we lowered the flags.”

Panasiuk says the Town has been lobbying to have a K-9 unit as part of the High Prairie RCMP force for around six years, and then about a year ago Jago joined the force.

“It was great to finally have a dog in our region, so it was really… you know it hurts to lose him so quickly after we got him up here.”

Panasiuk adds the dog was an asset to the force, and assisted in numerous police operations.

He says operational data could be used to advocate for bringing another PSD to the High Prairie RCMP in the future. However, as of right now, Panasiuk says they just want to honour Jago and his time serving the region.
