Court update: Sentence in weapons case, trial ordered in Slave Lake murder

Jun 23, 2021 | 5:30 AM

Alberta Justice says a 15-month jail sentence has been given out in connection with a 2019 weapons arrest.

Jeante Maddox was given the term, minus credit of 147 days for time already spent in custody, after pleading guilty to five of the 14 charges he was facing.

Those included possession of a prohibited firearm, resisting a peace officer, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, knowingly possessing a prohibited weapon, and possession of a firearm in a vehicle.

A trial had been scheduled from June 15 through 17.

Maddox was charged after Grande Prairie RCMP pulled over a vehicle on December 10, 2019, near Clairmont.

Mounties said at the time the license plate on the vehicle had been stolen and the suspect had tried to run away from police.

A search of the vehicle found a revolver, concealed gun holster, a knife, and bear spray.

Maddox has previously been given an 1129-day jail sentence, minus 400 days credit for time already spent in custody, after a 2017 drug arrest where he pleaded guilty to trafficking and firearms charges.

Trial ordered in Slave Lake murder

Alberta Justice says a High Prairie man charged after a murder in Slave Lake has been ordered to stand trial.

The order was given to Vernon Wayne Laboucan June 17 in Slave Lake court. Trial dates have not yet been set.

He was charged after the May 17, 2020, death of 34-year-old Christopher Valiquette of Swan River First Nation.

RCMP said at the time they were called to a Slave Lake home around 5:30 a.m. to a suspicious death. Police said then it looked Valiquette had been stabbed.

Warrants issued after court no-shows

Alberta Justice says a warrant for arrest has been issued for a man facing child pornography charges in Grande Prairie court.

Anas Khatib did not show up for a preliminary hearing that was scheduled for June 17.

He was one of 18 people from around Alberta charged in June of 2020 after a month-long investigation by the ALERT Internet Child Exploitation Unit that looked into what an ALERT release calls online child sexual exploitation.

On June 16, a Peace River court issued a warrant for Christopher Dale Laboucan.

He was to stand trial that day on charges related to an incident from June of 2020 in Peace River where people in two vehicles pointed guns at each other.

One vehicle was pulled over and two people arrested after what RCMP called a high-risk traffic stop. The other vehicle took off from an attempted traffic stop. After a pursuit and tire deflation devices were used, it too was stopped, and two more people were taken in.

Two of the people charged have already been given short jail sentences while charges were dropped against the third.
