County of Grande Prairie issues fire restriction

Jun 25, 2021 | 5:11 PM

The County of Grande Prairie has issued a fire restriction that also encompasses the towns of Beaverlodge, Sexsmith and Wembley, as well as the Village of Hythe.

They say with the extreme heat and dry conditions, no new fire or fireworks permits will be issued, and that all existing permits are now suspended until further notice.

Approved recreational fire pits with existing permits, including propane, and campfires in campgrounds are allowed.

County Fire Chief Dan Verdun says residents should only burn when necessary, as the risk of fires is currently very high.

“We’re asking residents to use their common sense as temperatures continue to rise,” he said. “Please only burn when absolutely necessary and take all the proper precautions.”

A fire restriction is also in place for the Grande Prairie Forest Area due to what is being forecast as a historic heat wave in the area.
