Grande Prairie Alliance Church, city facilities open as temporary cooling stations

Jun 28, 2021 | 2:09 PM

With Grande Prairie fully engulfed in a “heat dome” the Grande Prairie Alliance Church, as well as the City of Grande Prairie, are offering their facilities as temporary cooling stations for the public.

After what was already a record-breaking weekend weather-wise, Environment Canada says Grande Prairie could break even more daily records this week, beating the ones that were previously set on June 26 and June 27.

The cooling station at the Grande Prairie Alliance Church, located at 15502 102 Street, will be open from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on June 28, 29 and 30.

Rod Willems, the Executive Pastor at the Alliance Church, encourages anyone trying to beat the heat to come on down.

“If people want to come down, we do have quite a bit of indoor real estate that is air-conditioned,” said Willems.

“We are opening up for anybody from the public who is seeking rest from the heat over these next couple of days.”

Meantime the City of Grande Prairie says the following sites for drop-in during the heatwave for those in need of air conditioning:
