Grande Prairie man arrested following traffic stop, firearms charges laid

A traffic stop conducted by RCMP in Grande Prairie has led to a 34-year-old man being charged with several firearm offences.

On Saturday, June 26 at 11:12 p.m., RCMP officers were conducting patrols in the area of 84 Avenue and Poplar Drive.

An S.U.V. was spotted driving up on the curb and swerving into other lanes. Mounties then conducted a traffic stop, stopped the vehicle, and arrested the driver for impaired operation of a vehicle.

Mounties then searched the driver and found a Glock magazine with nine rounds of ammunition.

A search of the vehicle then led to the seizure of a Glock 23 handgun, a holster and a prohibited 22 round magazine.

Ryan Haynes, a 34-year-old male from Grande Prairie is charged with the following:

  • Unauthorized possession of a restricted/prohibited weapon x 3
  • Contravention of Prohibition Order x 4
  • Unsafe storage of a firearm

Following a judicial hearing, Haynes was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial Court on July 12, 2021.
