Canada Day festivities happening in Grande Prairie

Jul 1, 2021 | 7:00 AM

Canada Day is being celebrated throughout the City of Grande Prairie.

Despite the record-breaking warm temperatures, events are still good to go.

With mostly all public health and COVID-19 restrictions being lifted, the City has come up with a list of activities and events for the public to take part in.

Picnic in the Park:

Residents are invited to Muskoseepi Park to enjoy live entertainment and food trucks from noon to 5:00 p.m.

There will be musical acts performing at the Muskoseepi Park Amphitheatre. Previously, time slots were needed to watch the acts, however, with all gathering limits being lifted for venues on Canada Day across Alberta, everyone is invited to attend.

Along with those performances in the park, the splash park, playground and other amenities will be open.

Plaza Rock:

Due to the risk of inclement weather forecasted for the Grande Prairie area on Canada Day, the City announced on June 30 that it will be moving the Plaza Rock performances at the H.A. Rice Plaza to inside at the Bowes Events Centre.

All tickets will be honoured despite the new location.

The concert will feature the Derina Harvey Band with special guests The Northbloods, Kyle McKearney, and McKindred and runs from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Canada Day Scavenger Hunt:

The City of Grande Prairie is once again putting on its virtual Canada Day scavenger hunt.

The hunt is already underway and residents of all ages are encouraged to participate for a chance to win prizes.

To play, download the free Goose Chase Scavenger Hunt app, search for GP Canada Day 2021 or enter the game code 1G33L7 to uncover missions to complete.

The game runs until Sunday, July 4 at 11:59 p.m. and winners will be drawn at random and will be contacted by email on July 5.

Dual Drive-In Aerial Fireworks:

To close out Canada Day, residents are invited to participate in the Drive-In Dual Fireworks at either Muskoseepi Park or the CKC East Football Field at 11:30 p.m.

Washrooms will be made available in the Eastlink Centre or at the Ernie Radbourne Pavilion in Muskoseepi Park.

Hayley Kramps, the Recreation Programs Supervisor with the City of Grande Prairie tells EverythingGP they’re happy to put this on for the community.

“We are really excited to be able to offer live entertainment and we really look forward to seeing everyone come out and celebrate Canada Day safely.”

As of the evening of June 30, the fireworks are still planned to be launched, however, with the wildfire risk high in Grande Prairie, the fireworks display could change on a moment’s notice.

Updates on the firework shows will be made at the City’s website or on their social media platforms.

While there will be celebrations throughout Grande Prairie, some other communities across Canada have cancelled their annual celebrations, in order to reflect and think of the lives lost in residential schools.

Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton says the City has chosen to celebrate but is being mindful of the pain the indigenous community is going through right now.

“At our Canada Day festivities, we will be respectful. Our intent is to maintain a dual-tone of celebrating Canada, while acknowledging the past and present issues we face as a country and recognizing the needs to continue to pursue healing and reconciliation.”
