City unveils Heritage Day plans

Jul 8, 2021 | 1:18 PM

The City of Grande Prairie has revealed its plans for its annual Heritage Day Festival on July 31.

The day of activities will take place at the Grande Prairie Museum and Muskoseepi Park.

Hailey Kramps the Recreation Programs Supervisor for the City says the center of the activities will be the Grande Prairie Museum.

“We are going to have some historical demonstrations and performances in the Heritage Village in the Grande Prairie Museum, so we are really going to work to bring that space alive and give everybody a real feeling of what it would be like to live in those times,” explained Kramps.

“We’ve also got a few different activities that children can participate in, which will be really great.”

The activities at the Heritage Village will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guests will be able to view live blacksmiths, rope making and participate in authentic letter writing.

While there will be lots going on at the museum, Kramps tells EverythingGP that Muskoseepi Park will also have a wide range of activities.

“Over in Muskoseepi Park at the Amphitheatre, we’ll have our live art contest, which we did last year. It was very successful (last year) for us,” said Kramps.

“Accompanying that, we will have live music and food trucks, so you can get a bite to eat and enjoy the live music while watching artists paint.”

There are some guidelines artists must pass if they want to join the art contest.

Artists are asked to email two copies of their best pieces of work to programming@cityofgp.com by July 25 and have their application selected by a panel.

From there, the panel will select the five best pieces and invite artists to join them at Muskoseepi Park on July 31.

Artists will then be asked to paint an original picture of the Heritage Day theme from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The paintings will then be posted to Facebook and the public will decide the winner.

The winner will have their painting displayed inside the Ernie Radbourne Pavilion for one year.

While Heritage Day festivities aren’t until the end of the month, the City is asking for the public to choose this year’s theme.

Residents will be able to choose from:

  • The Cultures of the Peace Region
  • The City of Champions
  • Swan City Wildlife

People can vote for each theme by visiting the Muskoseepi Park Facebook page from July 12 through 19.

A virtual scavenger hunt will also take place from July 19 to August 2. More information can be found on the City’s website.

All of the Heritage Day events are free to attend.
