State of the Region session set for July 14

Jul 8, 2021 | 5:30 AM

The Grande Prairie & District Chamber of Commerce has organized a Zoom session called State of the Region to be held July 14.

The online session will include presentations from Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton, County of Grande Prairie Reeve Leanne Beaupre, and MD of Greenview Reeve Dale Smith.

Chamber chair Larry Gibson says.this comes after discussions with the municipalities over combing the State of the City and State of the County addresses.

“We hadn’t heard much on it actually with COVID and everything going on. Then just last week, they reached out and said that they were interested in proceeding and having the State of the Region. Being we were the ones that suggested it and were hoping to have it done one day, then we accommodated, and we were going to put it together.”

He adds organizers want to talk about things like recovery and resilience in the local economy.

“I think it is timely now that restrictions are off that our leaders of our larger centres out there are coming forward and letting us know what’s going on in their areas. They’re the ones that are in touch with everything that is going on.”

Gibson says it will be good for people to hear messages that there are lots of positive things happening and there are signs of growth ahead.

He adds how quickly things are coming back since restrictions lifted a week ago depends on the sector.

“We are seeing definitely a lot more optimism. Drilling activities in the oilfield. Some of that commercial real estate is starting to move now. I think this is stuff that was in play for quite some time it’s just now that restrictions are coming off and we’re hearing some of those positive signs. Of course, oil prices are helping that as well.”

The session will be held over Zoom. Registration can be done on the Chamber website. Questions can be mailed to the Chamber office at news@gpchamber.com
