County fire crews responding to grass fire near Huallen, public asked to avoid the area

Jul 9, 2021 | 4:04 PM

Fire crews throughout the County of Grande Prairie are responding to a growing grass fire located south of Huallen, near Township Road 711 and Range Road 92.

Firefighters from the Clairmont and Hythe stations and Beaverlodge and Wembley fire departments, as well as an Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AAF) helicopter, are on scene working to control the blaze.

Officials are telling the public to avoid the area and give the right of way to emergency vehicles as they travel to the scene.

Smoke will be visible in the area and may spread because of high winds.

Fire crews say the fire is suspected to be caused by a rock strike during harvesting.

Producers are being reminded to exercise caution when working during the dry conditions and to be prepared with a fire extinguisher and have a water source available to extinguish small fires if they occur.

Fire restrictions throughout the Peace Region remain in place, and the wildfire risk is very high.

Only permitted recreational fire pits and campfires are allowed. Residents are asked to exercise caution and burn only when necessary. Burning is not permitted when winds reach 12 km per hour or higher.

A fire ban could be implemented if the extreme conditions continue.
