Grande Prairie Legion re-opens following major renovation, pandemic closures

The Grande Prairie Legion is set to open its doors for the first time in 2021.

Because of major renovations inside and the COVID-19 pandemic, the Legion had only been open for three of the last 16 months.

Dan Christensen, the Chairman of the Building Committee for the Legion, says lots of work has been done inside to help create a new experience for guests.

“We’ve totally re-gutted our kitchen and rebuilt it,” said Christensen. “It’s about $300,000 worth of parts and we are finishing our refreshment centre on the bar (as well).”

Christensen says the renovations for the Legion have been long overdue.

“The original building was built in 1964-65. It was added onto in 1975 and they did a little bit of renovations in 1995, and otherwise what you saw is old equipment and the old style.”

Prior to this summer, the Legion had also planned to build a deck for the summer season. There was hope they’d be able to get lumber donations to help them complete the project. However, because of lumber prices skyrocketing over the last year, donations fell short and the Legion is planning to begin the project next year.

Given the renovations that have occurred over the last year and a half and everything that’s gone on with the COVID-19 pandemic, Christensen tells EverythingGP they’re excited to welcome everyone back.

“Friday (July 9) is the grand opening for the new equipment and a goodbye to the old bar. Friday and Saturday will be the last night for the old bar. We’ll also be saying farewell to our old manager who was here for 38 years.”

The Legion will be open 11:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. from Tuesday to Thursday, 11:30 a.m.-7:00 p.m. on Fridays and 10:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. on Saturdays.

The Legion is also looking for volunteers to help out throughout the summer.
