RCMP investigating arson at Peace River Catholic church

RCMP in Peace River are investigating an arson that occurred at a Peace River Catholic church last week.

Peace Regional RCMP say they received a report of a fire at the Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church at around 11 p.m. on Saturday, July 3. Police arrived at the scene with the Peace River Fire Department, where they found an employee of the church was able to extinguish the small blaze prior to emergency services arriving at the scene.

The church sustained minor damages such fire damage and a broken window, police say. No one was injured as a result of the fire.

An investigation by Peace Regional RCMP and Peace River Fire Department has determined the fire to be an arson.

RCMP are now asking for any information in relation to this incident and they asking those with knowledge of this incident to contact the Peace Regional RCMP at 780-624-6677 or their local police.

The arson follows other suspicious fires at Catholic churches in Alberta in recent weeks, including one which destroyed a historic church in downtown Morinville.
