Court update: Guilty pleas in fraud and assaulting a peace officer cases

Alberta Justice says a woman charged with defrauding a Grande Prairie post-secondary institution has pleaded guilty to one of the charges she was facing.

Kristina Van De Walle of Clairmont pleaded guilty to a count of fraud over $5000 July 5 in Grande Prairie court. A trial had been scheduled for the same day.

Sentencing has been set for September 8 when Van de Walle’s other charges will also be addressed.

Grande Prairie RCMP say they were notified of a possible fraud in February of 2018. and that their investigation found what were described as discrepancies in documents.

Van de Walle, a former employee of the institution, was arrested in April of 2019.

Guilty plea after incident involving police vehicles being rammed

Alberta Justice says the suspect charged after police vehicles were rammed on Christmas Eve last year has pleaded guilty to three charges.

Angus Byron Ferguson pleaded guilty to charges of assaulting a peace officer, dangerous operation of a vehicle and flight from a peace officer July 5 in Grande Prairie court.

Beaverlodge RCMP said at the time that Ferguson was wanted on 16 warrants when he was spotted on the Horse Lake First Nation around 11 a.m. December 24, 2020.

That led to Ferguson taking off towards Highway 43 and a pursuit that ended up on a dead-end lease site road in the Spirit River area.

Police vehicles were rammed, and the suspect vehicle took off down Highway 49. The police dog was brought after which Ferguson was arrested. The whole incident last for almost two-and-a-half hours.

Sentencing is set for November 22.

Preliminary hearing dates in sexual interference case

Alberta Justice says three preliminary hearing dates have been set for a Beaverlodge man charged with sexual interference and sexual touching.

The hearing dates are January 27, January 31, and February 22.

A court-ordered publication ban prohibits making public any information that could identify the victims.

The charges came after Beaverlodge RCMP made an arrest in March of this year related to allegations dating back to 2016.

RCMP say they received a report of what they called at the time “a report of sexual assault against a young child” in February of this year.
