Grande Prairie Public School Division Trustee Joan Nellis will be seeking re-election in the October municipal election.

Nellis is currently in her first term as a trustee for the division. In that time, she says she has pushed for the creation of new committees to address key priorities, like advocating to different levels of government.

“I’m proud of the support I was able to gain for the creation of an Advocacy and Engagement committee,” said Nellis, “I want to ensure our work in communicating with our community and different levels of government is intentional and well thought out; the creation of this committee will do that.”

One of those key points of advocacy Nellis points to, especially coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, is funding for public education. However, she says she remains optimistic about the future of public education in the province.

“Dollar for dollar, quality public education remains one of the best investments a government can make,” said Nellis.

“It is going to take a lot of planning to ensure that the quality of instruction is maintained in the face of these challenges, but I believe that it can be done, and I hope the voters of Grande Prairie will once again trust me to help establish a school system that we can all be proud of.”

Outside of her work on the school board, Nellis works as the Chief Financial Officer of an equipment rental company. In her spare time, she also serves on the City of Grande Prairie’s Economic Development Committee and has been a long-time member of the Swan City Rotary Club.

“Community involvement has always been a key part of our family and our business. And to me, the best way to strengthen this community is to provide good education to its future leaders.”

The next municipal election will be held on Monday, October 18.
