Special air quality statement issued for Grande Prairie area

Jul 14, 2021 | 3:14 PM

Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement for the Grande Prairie-Beaverlodge-Valleyview forecast area as smoke from the wildfires in B.C. makes its way into the Peace Region.

A similar statement is in place for the Peace River, Fairview, High Prairie, and Manning forecast area.

The smoke is causing poor air quality and reducing visibility throughout the region.

The weather office says Individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches, or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.

“Those with lung diseases, such as asthma and COPD, can be particularly sensitive to air pollution,” said Environment Canada. “They will generally experience more serious health effects at lower levels. Pollution can aggravate their diseases, leading to increased medication use, doctor and emergency room visits, and hospital visits.”

Those with any health conditions are reminded to take extra precautions to stay out of the smoke and reduce their exposure.

“Wildfire smoke is a constantly-changing mixture of particles and gasses which includes many chemicals that can harm your health,” warned Environment Canada.

According to the weather office, conditions are expected to improve later on Wednesday evening.

The statement runs concurrent to the ongoing heat warning for the region, as temperatures on July 14 are expected to reach 31 degrees.
