GPRC taking community suggestions on a new name

Grande Prairie Regional College says it is looking for new name suggestions from the community.

It was announced in May that the college would become a polytechnic. It will also soon have degree-granting status.

Acting President and CEO Dr. Glenn Feltham calls this is “a wonderful time for the institution.”

“Building on an amazing past, but really imagining a future where the role we play is so much broader and deeper. We so look forward to repeatedly engaging our community and in all sorts of discussion, but it’s going to start with the name.”

He adds there are several things they are asking people to consider when trying to come up with a new name.

“Names should be easy to remember. For example, connecting to features of a place or descriptive of a region,” said Feltham.

“The name should be broadly understood. Acronyms should be memorable and appropriate. The name should reflect the entire organization and it should stand the test of time.”

Dr. Feltham says he wants people to be able to connect with what he describes as “their polytechnic.”

“We exist to meet those needs, not just those needs directly out of high school, but those life-long learning needs. More and more we will all be coming back to school and that’s a great thing.”

Name suggestions can be submitted through the GPRC website. Feltham says the hope is to take a list of suggested names to the Board of Governors later this summer.
