City of Grande Prairie’s housing starts dipped in June after months of gains

The City of Grande Prairie saw new housing project starts and completions fall on a month-to-month basis in June.

According to statistics from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), the City of Grande Prairie had just 11 new builds start in June, ending a three month upward trend that began in March with 12 starts, 15 more in April and another 19 in May.

The housing starts in June consisted of five new single-family dwellings, two semi-detached homes, and four apartments.

Meanwhile, housing completions in the Swan City, which have been trending downward since 30 were recorded in April, dropped further to 13 in June. Of those completions, seven were single-family dwellings, three were row housing and three were apartments.

CMHC figures shows there are currently 86 housing projects in the construction phase in the City of Grande Prairie. Of those projects, 59 are single family dwellings, 12 are semi-detached, three are row houses, and 12 are apartments.

CMHC does not provide monthly figures for the County of Grande Prairie, but it’s records do show 50 new housing starts in the second quarter of 2021, up from the 39 recorded in the first quarter. The projects in the County consist of 48 single-family dwellings and two semi-detached.

The County also had 44 housing projects completed in the second quarter, up from the 17 recorded in the first.

As of the end of the second quarter, there were 57 projects consisting of 49 houses and eight row houses under construction in the County.
