August 3 still the target date to re-open 100 Street-100 Avenue intersection

A city official says the rain set back the work on 100 Avenue being done as part of the Downtown Rehabilitation and Streetscape Project “a little bit.”

City business ambassador Monty Haughian says despite the weather, they remain on track to re-open the intersection at 100 Avenue and 100 Street August 3.

“There was a lot of work in that intersection. A lot of connections of storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water connections. It was a very intricate intersection to work in and with all that big equipment in such a small area.”

“They are very close to completing the deeps work and that will allow the main contractor Knelson to get in there and start preparing for road service.”

He adds the rehabilitation work has “a lot of moving parts.”

“With the road surface and sidewalks. We’re just in the process of starting to make sure that the installation of the sidewalks will start pretty soon.”

“The road surface of 100 Avenue, in areas that can be paved, should have a base coat pretty soon between 99 Street and 100 Street.”

Haughian says there have been few complaints from downtown business owners during the work, adding the paved walkways have meant pedestrians can still access the businesses.

” (Talking to) one business, they’ve noticed an (increase) in pedestrian traffic through the area so that’s very important. We cannot say that they’re doing well because with COVID and everything else, this is a very tough situation but a lot of them seem to be doing not to bad so that’s the main thing.”

City Hall also says 99 Street will be closed to traffic south of 101 Avenue from Friday, July 23, through Monday, July 26. It had been open to local traffic and for access to the alley. The city says the closure is needed so storm line work on 99 Street and to reconnect catch basins to the stormwater drainage system in the alley.
