Residents encouraged to be ‘fire smart’ during the August long weekend

Jul 30, 2021 | 2:20 PM

With the August long weekend here, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry has issued a fire advisory.

The wildfire risk for the Grande Prairie Forest Area is currently sitting at high, with warm and dry temperatures expected over the course of the next five days.

“It’s very dry out there and we’ve had some really drying winds over the last week, so that prompted us to put a Fire Advisory on for the Grande Prairie Forest Area,” said Kelly Burke, the information officer for the Grande Prairie Forest Area. “Safe campfires are still allowed, but what it does is heighten the awareness that the fire danger is high and on the rise.”

Burke adds while the area did get some rain over the last two weeks, the wildfire threat still remains high.

“We really don’t know how much precipitation crossed the area. Some of that perception may have been patchy with the ground very dry. with drought”

According to Burke, historically, campfires are a reason why some wildfires get started. She asks if you’re having a campfire, to be careful and be aware.

“Campfires are a concern for us. Make sure that you put your fire out and never leave it unattended,” explained Burke.

“If you’re going to bed for the night, soak it, stir it, and soak it again and feel for heat. Always have water available and something to stir it up available to you if you’re going to start a fire.”

Burke mentioned there has also been an increase in equipment fires this year, something that she says is also a concern.

If you spot a wildfire, Burke asks that you call 310-FIRE immediately.
