City of Grande Prairie encouraging residents to attend Heritage Day festivities July 31

Jul 31, 2021 | 5:00 AM

The City of Grande Prairie is encouraging residents to head down to Muskoseepi Park and Grande Prairie Museum on July 31 to enjoy its annual Heritage Day Festival.

Hailey Kramps the Recreation Programs Supervisor for the City says the main activities on Saturday will be held at the Grande Prairie Museum.

“We are going to have some historical demonstrations and performances in the Heritage Village in the Grande Prairie Museum, so we are really going to work to bring that space alive and give everybody a real feeling of what it would be like to live in those times,” explained Kramps.

“We’ve also got a few different activities that children can participate in, which will be really great.”

The activities at the Heritage Village will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guests will be able to view live blacksmiths, rope making and participate in authentic letter writing.

While there will be lots going on at the museum, Kramps tells EverythingGP that Muskoseepi Park will also have a wide range of activities.

“Over in Muskoseepi Park at the Amphitheatre, we’ll have our live art contest, which we did last year. It was very successful (last year) for us,” said Kramps.

“Accompanying that, we will have live music and food trucks, so you can get a bite to eat and enjoy the live music while watching artists paint.”

Those participating in the art contest were selected by a panel of judges.

The artists will be asked to paint an original picture of the Heritage Day theme from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The paintings will then be posted to Facebook and the public will decide the winner.

The winner will have their painting displayed inside the Ernie Radbourne Pavilion for one year.

While Heritage Day festivities aren’t until the end of the month, the City is asking for the public to choose this year’s theme.

A virtual scavenger hunt is also taking place until August 2. More information can be found on the City’s website.

All of the Heritage Day events are free to attend.
