Court update: Jail sentences given after Rycroft-area incident, Grande Prairie drug arrests

Aug 2, 2021 | 7:00 AM

Alberta Justice says an incident in Rycroft last October that saw a police vehicle rammed by a man in a stolen pick-up has led to a two-year jail sentence against the driver.

Jesse William Jackson of Peace River pleaded guilty to charges of flight from a peace officer, mischief causing damage under $5000, two of possession of stolen property over $5000, three more of possession of stolen property under $5000, and one more of possession of break-in instruments.

He will be given two months credit for time already spent in custody.

RCMP said at the time that on October 16, 2020, they got a report of a suspicious vehicle at the Rycroft UFA.

When Mounties tried to speak to the driver, the heavy-duty pick-up hit a police vehicle twice, once after officers told him to stop. The truck was then driven into an occupied vehicle in the parking lot before taking off.

Mounties followed the truck west on Highway 49 for about eight kilometres before the driver abandoned the truck and ran into a nearby home. RCMP got a call from a homeowner asking to get the suspect out of the house, after which Jackson was arrested.

A search turned 273 vehicle keys and a key decoder.

Jackson was already wanted on warrants from Peace River and Fairview.

Man charged in multiple drug arrests given jail time

Alberta Justice says a four-year jail sentence has been given to a Grande Prairie man charged in several drug arrests.

Brandon Garvie pleaded guilty to charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of stolen property over $5000 in relation to an arrest in May of this year.

RCMP said at the time that an investigation led to the search of a home at 100 Avenue and 97 Street on May 14.

Fentanyl, pills, crack cocaine, methamphetamine, three prohibited weapons and close to $6400 cash were all seized.

Co-accused Jesse Aaron Derksen is due back in court August 9.

Garvie also pleaded guilty to a charge of trafficking connected to another arrest this year.

He was given two months credit for time already spent in jail.

Ten other charges against Garvie for a third arrest in November of 2020 were withdrawn.

He and another man were charged after fentanyl, cocaine, crystal meth, cash and ammunition were seized during the search of a pair of apartments downtown.

Stolen property, including two passports, was also recovered.

A warrant for co-accused Jared Holland has been out since April when he did not show up for court.
