Court update: Sentence in Peace River manslaughter, new trial dates in Sturgeon Lake homicide

Aug 3, 2021 | 5:30 AM

Alberta Justice says a Peace River man has been given an eight-year jail sentence after pleading guilty to a manslaughter charge.

Daniel Sawan was given 13-and-a-half months credit for time already spent in custody July 23 in Peace River court.

Sawan was originally charged with murder after the July 16, 2020 death of a 42-year-old man in Peace River.

The man was found unconscious outside of a Peace River apartment building. He died at the scene.

Mounties did not release the victim’s name but said he was from the Peace Region.

New trial dates set in Sturgeon Lake murder

Alberta Justice says new trial dates have been set for two men charged after the 2019 murder of a Sturgeon Lake man.

Allan Hamelin and Harlin Martineau, both of Sturgeon Lake, will now have a trial by jury from October 17 to November 4, 2022, in Grande Prairie.

They were both charged after the June 16, 2019 disappearance and death of Barry Goodswimmer.

They were to stand trial in June, but that was put off when Hamelin’s lawyer asked for a mental health assessment to be done after what was described as a concern came up.

A mistrial was declared because a jury had already been picked.
