Shovels are planned to hit the ground this fall on a new traffic light at the intersection of 108 Street and 132 Avenue.

The City and County of Grande Prairie agreed to split the cost of the estimated $400,000 project equally between both municipalities.

The intersection where the new traffic light will be installed is located north of the City limits near St. John Paul II Catholic School.

County Reeve Leanne Beaupre says the new traffic lights will help improve the safety of motorists and pedestrians.

“This kind of collaboration on important transportation improvements makes getting around safer for both County and City residents, improves connectivity between our municipalities, and strengthens our communities and our region,” she said.

City of Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton says projects like this are an example of how important regional collaboration is to help improve safety in the community.

“This project is an example of how important regional collaboration is to improve quality of life, foster safe communities, and provide residents with high-quality amenities and services across municipal boundaries,” said Clayton. “We are pleased to work with the County of Grande Prairie to install traffic signals at a key intersection that provides County residents access to the City.”

In a release, it adds the City is also in the early stages of planning additional upgrades in the area.

Some of those upgrades include realigning and rebuilding the road structure along 108 Street between 132 Avenue, as well as, additional traffic lights at the intersection of 132 and Arbour Hills Boulevard near St. John Paul II Catholic School.

The City is also planning on building a walkway to the existing paved walkway in the County.

Work on the intersection is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.
