Greatest Show in the Peace kicks off in Dawson Creek Wednesday

Aug 11, 2021 | 5:00 AM

Organizers call it the Greatest Show in the Peace.

Wednesday, August 11 marks Day 1 of the 99th Dawson Creek Exhibition & Stampede.

President Connie Patterson says this is a big deal for Dawson Creek.

“We’re just looking forward to everyone coming. It’s been a long time since we’ve been able to hug our neighbours, you know, and say hello,” said Patterson “We’re really looking forward to seeing everyone.”

She adds the agriculture fair, chuckwagon races and rodeo will all be back, but there will not be a midway.

“It was just too short of notice and too big a thing for our midway. They’ve been with us for 30 years,” she explained. “What normally happened is they had three Alberta shows they did first and they brought that midway over to Dawson Creek and they brought the other half of it from Vancouver.”

“Those other three shows are not on. It’s 800 miles from Vancouver to come to Dawson Creek. It was just too big of an expense for them.”

Patterson says while it is a big deal for the community to have the fair back, the 100th anniversary next year will be a huge celebration.

She is hoping fans will be able to share some memorabilia from past editions.

“We’re looking for anything and anybody who has anything to do with the Dawson Creek Exhibition or the Stampede. We started in 1922 and we’ve got a few blank years,” Patterson said.

“We do know that the war shut us down for a few years there. We’re missing, I think, 1928 to 1931. We can’t seem to find anything for that.”

Patterson says items can be scanned or a picture can be taken. They are hoping to compile a book that would feature something from each year

The Dawson Creek Exhibition & Stampede runs through Sunday. A link to the schedule can be found here.
