Northern Twistmasters operations getting back to normal with restrictions lifted

Aug 22, 2021 | 5:00 AM

The Northern Twistmasters Armwrestling Club says things are finally getting back to normal now that COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted across Alberta.

“We’re back practicing as a club again,” said Doug Curtiss, the Head Coach for the Northern Twistmasters.

“We’ve been doing it out at my place, and a few arm wrestlers have been hosting practices at their houses in town.”

Curtiss tells EverythingGP they are currently looking for a new clubhouse for members to meet at. Their old clubhouse had to be given up because of the pandemic.

“We’re definitely looking for a (clubhouse), where we can meet up and be out there in public,” Curtiss said.

“We’ve been at Eastlink Centre and Crosslink County Sportsplex and are making the rounds trying to find somebody who is interested in hosting our practices.”

With restrictions now lifted, Curtiss says he noticed more people in Grande Prairie are gaining interest in picking up the sport.

“We probably have 35-40 people (including the part-timers). I would say we’ve grown if anything because arm wrestling has grown in popularity.”

“You see these guys making the rounds on TikTok, YouTube and Facebook, so, there’s a lot of interest in it,” he explained.

“People have been reaching out to us looking to sign-up once things got up and going again.” Curtiss mentioned that YouTube has one of the biggest followings for arm wrestling.

In May 2020 the Northern Twistmasters was supposed to host the Alberta arm wrestling provincials, however, it was postponed because of the pandemic.

With popularity growing and things mostly back to normal, the Northern Twistmasters can finally host the provincial championship in October.

Curtiss says the club is excited about the opportunity to host provincials.

“We’ve booked October 2 (for provincials) and are looking around for sponsors. We’ve picked a venue and are trying to bring it all together. There will be something for everyone and it’ll be a great event to watch and participate in. If anyone wants to give it a try, we definitely encourage them to come out so we can give you the tips and tricks and help them to win.”

Those interested in joining the Northern Twistmasters or get involved with arm wrestling are encouraged to reach out to the club on their Facebook page.

From there, they can share information on their schedule and their future plans.
