Yad Minhas seeking re-election on Grande Prairie City Council

Aug 22, 2021 | 5:00 AM

Yad Minhas has announced he’ll be seeking re-election to Grande Prairie City Council on October 18.

After spending seven years as a councillor in the city, Minhas says he’s seeking re-election because he feels council had a successful past year and he wants to continue using his experience to serve his community.

“The best thing I learned and the most thing I liked, we are a very diversified council,” Minhas said. “There was lots of debate in the council meeting.”

With that, Minhas says if re-elected, he is hoping to keep tax rates lower than when he started in 2017.

“I want to stay on the course because we’ve been working very closely with administration in keeping our tax low,” he said.

“The challenge in the future is we want to bridge the gap between the city and county and tax so people can stay in the city rather than building houses in the county.”

Another top priority for Minhas is helping to support local educational opportunities (like GPRC) and support young people who are looking for jobs.

“I would like to support the younger generation finding the job economically and that’s where post-secondary education is important.”

Minhas says more goals he has in mind if he is re-elected are to help support local businesses, continue to scale back city expenses and budgets, continue to improve city services, and support infrastructure projects that will improve traffic flow in the city.

“I am committed to advocating for the people of Grande Prairie, and I will continue to do my maximum best to build a stronger community together as we continue to grow.”

Minhas believes he is a very diversified councilor, as he believes his experience allows him to have more knowledge in budget handling, decision making, and management.

Minhas joins a list of 14 candidates who intend to run for council this fall, including:

  • Ejibola Folashade Adetokunbo-Taiwo
  • Ngemital Paul Rovin
  • Michael Patrick O’Connor
  • Solomon Okhifoh
  • Grant Berg
  • Neil Tuazon
  • Dylan Bressey
  • Kevin P. O’Toole
  • Wendy Bosch
  • Tammy Brown
  • John Lehners
  • Kevin McLean
  • Gerald Scott Hafner

Three people have also put their names forward for mayor, including Eunice Friesen, Jackie Clayton, and Bryan Petryshyn.

Two candidates have also filed their papers for the office of Public School Board Trustee, including Joan Nellis and Andre Ouelette.
