81 new COVID-19 cases reported in Grande Prairie over weekend

There were 81 new cases of COVID-19 identified in the City of Grande Prairie between August 20 and 22, along with 52 recoveries, bringing the total number of active cases in the Swan City up by 29 to 363 as of the end of day Sunday.

Active cases in the County of Grande Prairie are up to 148 as there were 32 new cases identified there over the weekend, along with 13 recoveries.

Across Alberta, there were 1,972 new cases identified from Aug.20-22 (821 on Friday, 678 Saturday and 473 on Sunday) from 22,952 tests, resulting in an 8.6 per cent test positivity rate.

Active case totals, as of August 22, among Peace Region municipalities are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 363 active (+29)

  • Birch Hills County: three active (+1)
  • MD of Spirit River: seven active (+3)

Over the weekend, Hospitalizations in Alberta due to COVID-19 jumped up by 23 to 244, with 54 people in the ICU, an increase of six from Thursday night. Of the 190 non-ICU patients, 82.1% are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. Of the 54 in ICU, 96.4% are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.

Hospitalizations declined in the North Zone, meanwhile, going from 24 to 21, while three people remain in the ICU.

Five more deaths from COVID-19 were reported to Alberta Health over the weekend. A total of 2,348 Albertans have died as a result of COVID-19.

In Grande Prairie, 59 per cent of residents eligible (aged 12 and older) have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 50.9 per cent of the eligible population has been fully vaccinated.

In Alberta, 77.3 per cent of the eligible population have received one dose of the vaccine, while 68.8 per cent of those eligible are fully vaccinated.
