Grande Prairie records 30th COVID-19 fatality

A death from COVID-19 has been recorded in the City of Grande Prairie Wednesday, becoming the 30th fatality from COVID in the city since March of 2020.

The death was the lone fatality reported to Alberta Health over the last 24 hours in the province, bringing the COVID-19 death toll to 2,356 in Alberta.

EverythingGP has confirmed with Alberta Health the death was a woman in her 60’s. The case included comorbidities.

The death comes as there were 37 new cases of COVID-19 identified in the city on Tuesday, August 24, along with 45 recoveries. Those figures drop the number of active cases in the city down to 375.

Active cases in the County of Grande Prairie are up 11 to 177 active cases over the past 24 hours.

Across Alberta, there were 1,076 new cases identified on August 24 from 11,747 tests, resulting in a 9.2 per cent test positivity rate.

Active case totals, as of August 24, among Peace Region municipalities are as follows:

Over the past 24 hours, hospitalizations in Alberta due to COVID-19 climbed by 15 to 284, with 58 people in the ICU, an increase of one.

Of the 284 people in hospital, 221 are unvaccinated. Of the 59 people in an ICU, 55 are unvaccinated.

Hospitalizations jumped in the North Zone to 28 as of Tuesday night, while three people remain in the ICU.

In Grande Prairie, 59.2 per cent of residents eligible (aged 12 and older) have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 51.2 per cent of the eligible population has been fully vaccinated.

In Alberta, 77.5 per cent of the eligible population have received one dose of the vaccine, while 69 per cent of those eligible are fully vaccinated.
