Town of Sexsmith holding community summer celebration Saturday

The Town of Sexsmith is gearing up for its summer community celebration which is kicking off on Saturday, August 28.

Mayor Kate Potter says their annual event, Chautauqua Days, was cancelled two years in a row due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite Chautauqua Days being cancelled again this year, she suggests this time around, they will be celebrating the community’s resilience over the past 16 months.

“It really is an opportunity to reconnect with neighbours and the community and celebrate coming through something really unique in our time,” she said.

Potter says the summer event will kick off on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with the Sexsmith Rent-a-Tool pancake breakfast. She mentioned there will also be a fishing derby and bouncy castles for kids of all ages.

Potter adds council decided to also hold a free barbeque lunch. She notes that the free lunch was critical for the celebration.

“It’s been a crazy year or a couple of years for a lot of people, and we wanted to make sure that while we could, we are able to get together and sort of, celebrate, the resilience and community spirit that we had.”

Along with many other events throughout the day, Potter says Bob Rycroft and Friends Band will be playing at the Civic Centre at 4:00 p.m. Saturday.

“Bob Rycroft, who is a well-known local celebrity, used to be the mayor of Sexsmith, and his family has been part of Sexsmith history for a long time…. He will be putting on a show sort of a country and old-time favorites,” stated Potter.

Potter says she hopes the community all comes out to enjoy the event.

“Just show up and enjoy! We do encourage people as well to be aware as well that not everybody is super comfortable in crowds, so keeping that in mind as they come out.”
