Leanne Beaupre seeking re-election to County of Grande Prairie Council this fall

Current County of Grande Prairie Reeve Leanne Beaupre says she will be seeking another term on County Council in the municipal election this fall.

Beaupre says she decided to run again because of her love for the job.

“I really enjoy what I do. It’s a different job every day,” Beaupre said. “There’s something new that comes through the door, and it’s really satisfying when we are able to see projects come to fruition and find that balance between economic development and being able to provide for your ratepayers.

“I just felt it was an opportunity to continue down the same road.”

Beaupre has served on Council since 2004 and has been the Reeve since April of 2012. If re-elected to her position on Council, she says she would be open to remaining the Reeve if asked to by her fellow councilors.

“I certainly would, I enjoy that position as well. It’s challenging, you have to be somewhat of a diplomat in some respects, but I really enjoy the people that I work with, and it makes that job even more rewarding,” she expressed.

As of August 25, there are only three incumbents who have filed their nomination papers for the fall election, including Beaupre (Division 3), Peter Harris (Division 6), and Karen Rosvold (Division 8).

According to Beaupre, she says one of the biggest challenges if she is re-elected will be getting all newly elected officials up to speed on how council operates.

“The County is a very fast-moving, ever-evolving place. And by the looks of it, we might have five new council members. It’s going to be a learning curve not only for administration, but also a learning curve for those new councillors that will come in.”

Those interested in running for a seat on Council are invited to take part in an information session held at Evergreen Park on August 26. The session will help give current or future candidates an opportunity to learn more about the roles and responsibilities included with being a councillor
