RCMP lay assault, drug charges following traffic stop in Grimshaw

Aug 26, 2021 | 5:25 PM

Peace Regional RCMP say they have laid charges against a man following a traffic stop early Wednesday morning in Grimshaw.

At approximately 2:40 a.m. on August 25, officers on patrol encountered a motorcycle that sped across their path near Highway 2 and 50th Avenue.

Officers attempted to make a traffic stop as the motorcycle accelerated at a high rate of speed, and the suspect stalled out a short distance later.

Once the motorcycle was stopped, the officers exited their vehicle and approached the driver. As officers approached, the drive threw his motorcycle and his helmet at them and fled on foot.

The suspect then into the yard of a nearby residence and tried to hide under a deck. The man was eventually apprehended safely and without further incident.

Following the arrest, officers found a knife on the suspect, suspected methamphetamine and other evidence.

A further investigation determined the motorcycle had also been stolen.

Now, 32-year-old Clifford William Carifelle of Grimshaw has been chared with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime, possession of property obtained by crime under $5000, two counts of assault of a peace officer, flight from peace officer and six counts failure to comply with condition of a release order.

Carifelle has also been charged with five contraventions of the Traffic Safety Act.

He remains in custody at this time and is scheduled to appear in Peace River Provincial Court on September 13, for the purpose of a judicial interim release hearing.
