CALGARY – A Toronto man has been handed a fine and must cover court costs for taking photos of an Alberta judge and Alberta Health Services lawyer then posting them online.

Donald Smith, whose lawyer called him an amateur journalist, appeared in court by video from Toronto before Justice Adam Germain.

He was fined $1,000 for contempt of court and must pay $1,500 in court costs.

Smith had taken photos of a court hearing related to violations of Alberta’s COVID-19 protocol and told his followers in a video that he realized he could go to jail for his actions.

He apologized in court and took full responsibility for the photos.

Meanwhile, Calgary mayoralty candidate Kevin J. Johnston is to learn his fate Sept. 8 after he was found guilty of violating three COVID-19 court orders.

An Alberta Health Services lawyer says he will request a significant amount of time in jail as a sentence.
