30 km/h school zones in Grande Prairie back in effect Monday

Drivers will need to ease up on the gas pedal in school zones, as the 30 km/h speed limit in school zones goes back into effect on Monday, August 30 in Grande Prairie.

School zone speeds are in effect on school days from Monday to Friday between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Sgt. Charlene Gallant with Enforcement Services says while speed is always a top concern in school zones as drivers transition back to the lower speed limit, she says there are other issues officers watch out for.

“Also parking. Parking is always an issue around schools, and we certainly want all drivers to adhere to the restricted parking and where you are allowed,” said Gallant, who also reminds drivers to not stop on or within five metres of a marked crosswalk or bus stop.

She adds drivers can expect a ramped-up level of enforcement in school zones during the month of September.

“We will have our officers showing a strong presence in school zones,” explained Gallant.

“When school does come back in, we certainly assign officers to various schools to ensure that we have a strong presence.”

She adds drivers should be patient and vigilant when entering a school zone, as kids tend to be a bit unpredictable.

“Just take a little bit of extra time getting to work. Kids are certainly excited to get back to school, and sometimes they are not always paying attention,” said Gallant. “Just be cautious drivers and keep your eyes open for little ones crossing the road.”

Pedestrians are also reminded to follow their own school zone safety measures, including crossing at marked crosswalks and use the “point, pause, proceed” method, wear light or bright coloured clothing, to never assume drivers can see you, even if you can see them and to avoid using cell phones when crossing the road.

Those biking to school are also reminded to wear a helmet. Those who fail to do so can be issued a fine of $97.
