Grande Prairie adds 56 new COVID-19 cases, 27 recoveries

The City of Grande Prairie added 56 new cases of COVID-19, along with 27 recoveries for August 26, bringing the active case total in the City up to 427.

Active cases in the County of Grande Prairie are up eight to 185 as of the end of day Thursday, as there were 13 new cases and 13 recoveries recorded there.

The rise in cases comes as Alberta Health Services announced that approximately 45 elective surgeries per week were slated to be postponed at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Grande Prairie starting Monday to increase bed capacity and create a dedicated COVID-19 unit to meet rising demand in the hospital.

Across Alberta, there were 1,168 new cases identified on August 26 from 11,586 tests, resulting in a 10 per cent positivity rate.

Active case totals, as of August 26, among Peace Region Municipalities, are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 427 active (+29)

  • Birch Hills County: three active (-1)
  • MD of Spirit River: 10 active (-1)
  • Saddle Hills County: five active (+3)
  • MD of Peace: 58 active (+8)
  • MD of Fairview: four active (-1)
  • MD of Smoky River: 27 active (-)
  • Big Lakes County: 45 active (+6)
  • County of Northern Lights: eight active (+1)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 20 active (+6)

Across the province, hospitalizations over the last 24 hours increased by 28 to 336, with 74 people in the ICU, an increase of ten.

Of those in hospital, 256 are unvaccinated. Of the 74 people in ICU, 69 are unvaccinated.

In the North Zone, 36 people are in hospital with COVID-19, an increase of two from the day prior. Three of patients are in intensive care, down one from Wednesday.

Four more deaths from COVID-19 were reported to Alberta Health over the last 24 hours. A total of 2,364 Albertans have died from COVID-19 since March, 2020.

In Grande Prairie, 59.5 per cent of residents eligible (aged 12 and older) have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 51.4 per cent of the eligible population has been fully vaccinated.

In Alberta, 77.7 per cent of the eligible population have received one dose of the vaccine, while 69.3 per cent of those eligible are fully vaccinated.
