Grande Prairie man charged with firearm, drug offences

A Grande Prairie man has been charged with various offences related to drugs and firearms, after it was discovered he had breached curfew conditions earlier this month.

The Grande Prairie RCMP say at 12:05 a.m. on August 12, the detachment’s Crime Reduction Unit was on patrol in a rural area where they spotted a male in a vehicle parked at a residence. The man was known to police and was supposed to be on curfew conditions of a release order.

Officers say they approached the man and placed him under arrest after they observed several indicators of drugs in the vehicle.

While conducting a search of the male, police located a pocket knife, what is believed to be 142 grams of crystal meth and 30 grams of fentanyl.

Once the RCMP obtained a warrant to search the vehicle, they also found a seized a loaded .22 calibre handgun and ammunition and a loaded shotgun.

RCMP also located what was believed to be 1100 tablets of oxycontin, 24 grams of crack cocaine. another 19 grams of crystal meth and five grams of fentanyl as well as drug paraphernalia like digital scales, small baggies and other items used for the distribution of controlled substances.

Now, 32-year-old John Wolitski of Grande Prairie has been charged with 16 counts of possession of a firearm while prohibited, four counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, three counts of failure to comply with a release order, careless storage of a firearm, and two counts of possession of a prohibited firearm in a motor vehicle.

After a judicial hearing, Wolitski was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial Court on September 15.
