Sexsmith native Carter Rowney and the Detroit Red Wings have agreed to terms on a one-year contract worth $825,000.

The 32-year-old centre has spent five seasons in the NHL, where he’s split time between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Anaheim Ducks. Rowney won the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh back in 2017.

In 19 games with the Ducks during the 2020-21 season, he compiled six assists, but missed most of the season because of a left knee injury.

Rowney is a former member of the Grande Prairie Storm, where he played from 2005-09, helping his team win an AJHL championship in 2008-09. He was also named the MVP of the playoffs during that championship run.

Rowney and the Red Wings begin their pre-season schedule on September 29 against the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Red Wings first game of the regular season is scheduled for October 14 against Tampa Bay.

Rowney has scored 20 goals and added 37 assists in 223 career NHL games.
