Caribbean Association of Grande Prairie preparing for busy September

Sep 6, 2021 | 7:00 AM

September will be a busy month for the Caribbean Association of Grande Prairie as they gear up to host two major events.

The two events they’ll be hosting include a special ‘make your own’ headdress workshop on September 11 and their annual fashion show on September 18.

Shannae Delancy with the Caribbean Association tells EverythingGP interest in the Caribbean Association has grown over the last year. She adds there’s been lots of interest from the public in the headdress workshop.

“In the workshops, families will get an opportunity to learn how to make a Caribbean headdress that is often worn during Caribbean carnival. Each slot for the event we are able to accommodate a family of up to four and there are ten spots per event,” explained Delancy.

“The materials will be provided and there will be an experienced carnival costume designer from Edmonton. The participants will be able to make their own headpieces and then take them home afterward.”

According to Delancy, a lot of the interest in regards to the headdress workshop is coming from people who aren’t members of the Caribbean Association, which she says is a promising sign.

“I’m happy to see the non-Caribbean Association members are excited for this,” she expressed.

The headdress workshop will be taking place at the Montrose Cultural Centre. You can register at the Grande Prairie Public Libraries website.

Shortly after the workshop, the Caribbean Association will gear up to host their annual fashion show on September 18, which Delancy says is always a fun time.

“It will be a similar format as last year and it will be two hours and jam-packed with colourful Caribbean outfits with different styles. Those outfits will be modeled by different community members,” she said.

“In addition to the models, there will be a live art demonstration and advanced performances, it will be jam-packed with lots of entertainment.”

The fashion show is free to attend and more information can be found at the Caribbean Association’s Facebook page.
