Grande Prairie records 159 new COVID-19 cases, one death over long weekend

The City of Grande Prairie added 159 new cases of COVID-19 along with 121 recoveries between September 3 and 6, as well as one more death.

Those figures bring the active case total in the Swan City up to 529, the highest active case total reached during the pandemic in the city. The previous high was recorded on May 6, when there were 510 active cases in Grande Prairie.

The death recorded in the city is the 31st since March of last year and 23rd in 2021. Alberta Health says the death was a man in his 80s and included pre-existing conditions.

The fatality was also one of 17 reported to Alberta between Friday and Monday. 2,407 Albertans have now died from COVID-19.

In the County of Grande Prairie, active COVID-19 cases increased by 13 to 190, after 69 new cases new cases and 56 recoveries were recorded there over the weekend.

Across Alberta, there were 4,903 new cases identified over the last four days (1,330 on Friday, 1,450 on Saturday, 820 on Sunday and 1,303 on Monday), following the completion of 41,217 tests. Those tests had a positivity rate of 11.9 per cent.

Active case totals, as of September 6 among Peace Region municipalities, are as follows:

Across the province, hospitalizations grew by 87 over the last four days to 602, with 137 people in the ICU, an increase of 19 from Thursday.

In the North Zone, 71 people are in hospital (up 10 from Thursday) with seven of those patients in the ICU (down one).

In Grande Prairie, 60.8 per cent of residents who are eligible (those aged 12 and up) have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 52.7 per cent of the eligible population have been fully vaccinated.

In Alberta, 78.6 per cent of the eligible population have received one dose of the vaccine, while 70.6 per cent of those eligible are fully vaccinated.
