Thiessen seeking third term on council

Sep 7, 2021 | 5:36 PM

Grande Prairie City Councilor Chris Thiessen will be seeking a third term on council in this fall’s municipal election.

Thiessen has been a resident of Grande Prairie for the majority of his life and is very involved in the community through volunteering and as a current or previous member of various organizations.

He tells EverythingGP he’s running again because are still a lot of items he wants to check off his box.

“I think the big reason I’m running again is because there’s so much to do. We’ve got momentum going in the realms of sustainability in our community with the number of houses we’ve been able to put people into or purchase. As well as the edible landscaping, that’s really taken off with GP Grows and I’d really like to see that one through,” he explained.

“We have new leadership, we’ll have a new council and I’m hopeful I’ll be able to serve a third term on council.”

Thiessen feels it’s critical to get sustainable and affordable housing built, especially after the Swan City climbs out of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“That comes with lots of advocacy and lots of funds going in to ensure people have houses at an affordable rate,” he added.

“Of course, COVID has been a big challenge for every community moving forward. So, how do we tackle the aftermath of that and how do we get people moved back into a better semblance of normal?”

He says if he does serve a third term, he’d like to also develop a community wellness strategy to get people out and supporting each other.

“I think one of the biggest challenges our community is going to face is getting back to some semblance of normalcy,” said Thiessen. “I’d like to work with administration and council on developing a community wellness strategy and hopefully give people more things to do.”

Thiessen is one of 18 Grande Prairie residents who will be vying for a place on council during the October 18 municipal election.
