Grande Prairie traffic stop leads to firearm charges

A traffic stop conducted on September 5 in Grande Prairie has led to the RCMP laying firearm charges against 31-year-old Garett Nameth from Regina, Saskatchewan.

At approximately 1:05 a.m., RCMP conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a non-moving violation.

An investigation found the driver did not poses a valid driver’s licence and was breaching conditions of a conditional sentence order.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested and searched. Officers were able to locate a small amount of what was believed to be methamphetamine, a homemade baton, two knives, a shotgun and shotgun ammunition.

Nameth has been charged with:

  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm x 2
  • Possession of a firearm knowing possession is unauthorized
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm in a vehicle
  • Possession of a prohibited firearm with readily accessible ammunition
  • Careless storage of a firearm

Following a judicial hearing, Nameth was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial Court on September 8.
