City of Grande Prairie to recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Sep 13, 2021 | 3:47 PM

The City of Grande Prairie has announced it will recognize and commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation as a permanent Statutory Holiday for all City staff on September 30.

In a release, the City of Grande Prairie says this comes as an additional step to advance reconciliation efforts with the Indigenous community and to help honour their legacy and celebrate their positive impact in the community.

The day will also be used as a day to remember and reflect on the harm caused to the Indigenous community throughout Canada’s history.

By declaring the Day for Truth and Reconciliation as a holiday for all City of Grande Prairie staff on September 30, the following facilities will be impacted:

  • City Hall – closed
  • City Service Centre – closed
  • Montrose Cultural Centre – closed except for The Grande Prairie Public Library
  • Grande Prairie Museum – closed
  • Heritage Discovery Centre – closed

All 311 services, Eastlink Centre, Ernie Radbourne Pavillion, and transit will operate on regular hours.

“The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is an opportunity for reflection on our ongoing reconciliation efforts and relationship with the Indigenous community,” said Grande Prairie City Council in a statement.

“We collectively call upon Grande Prairie residents to observe the day, reflect on your personal role in reconciliation, and honour the Indigenous community by partaking in a community event planned to commemorate the day.”
