Provincial grant allows GPPL to purchase gaming computers

Sep 14, 2021 | 1:41 PM

The Grande Prairie Public Library (GPPL) is now home to 15 new gaming computers for its members to use.

The new equipment was purchased thanks to a recent Community Initiatives Grant from the Government of Alberta

Seven of the gaming computers will be placed in the teen area, six will go into the children’s area and two will eventually be placed in the adult’s area.

Jacob Fehr, the Head of Children’s & Teen Services, says by adding the gaming computers, it will help support the development of digital literacy skills for its members.

“Gaming helps players learn to navigate digital worlds, adjust to changing circumstances, and communicate effectively with others when body language and non-verbal cues are unavailable,” he explained.

“This opportunity allows us to make these computers available to library users and ensure that everyone in our community has an opportunity to develop these digital literacy skills without buying expensive home computers or game consoles.”

The teen computers will feature over 100 games like Fortnite, Unreal Tournament and Among Us.

The children’s computers will have more age-appropriate games such as Roblox, PBS Games and Poptropica.

All of the computers will also be accompanied with a 27″ curved screen.
