Gladys Blackmore seeking another opportunity on city council

Sep 19, 2021 | 5:00 AM

Gladys Blackmore is the latest Grande Prairie resident to file her papers and enter the race for a seat on Grande Prairie City Council on October 18.

Long-time Grande Prairie residents will likely know Blackmore, as she previously served on council from 2001-2010. She also ran against Bill Given for the position of mayor back in 2013.

Now retired from her previous day job, Blackmore says she has more time on her hands and wants to get back to lending a hand with local politics.

“Since that time, I moved to the Suicide Prevention (Resource Centre) and then I retired. Now I feel like I have the time and commitment to put into the job. I have the experience to bring some solid governance to the table,” Blackmore explained.

Blackmore feels her experience could play a big role in helping shape the future of the city.

“I think I bring a unique perspective because I have a business degree and I managed non-profits for a long time,” she said.

“You run a non-profit as a business, but at the same time, you have to be particularly careful about where the money goes and how it’s spent and what’s spent on administration versus what’s spent on the actual mandate of the business. I think that’s a unique perspective.”

There are a couple of issues Blackmore says she would like to tackle if she gets a seat on council.

“There are some issues that are coming to council that have been settled, but probably have to be managed more than anything. I’m thinking of Stonebridge and the programs going into that.”.

“In general, I believe Grande Prairie is a working city for working people. We need to keep on making sure that we deal with snow removal, recreation is maintained and developed. I think we need to keep all of this on track while keeping pocketbooks happy. Taxes aren’t going away either, but they need to be managed very carefully.”

Blackmore encourages people to view her website for more on her campaign.
